Introducing the NSDS Handgun Life Saver Drill and the 10-8 Standard drills! Researching through mountains of Officer Involved Shootings (OIS incidents), we noticed several traits and patterns that presented themselves. Each of these standards stages are designed to imitate OIS incidents that are seen repeatedly throughout the law enforcement community in this country. They are a combination of speed, accuracy, and throttle control. There are two levels to the standards.
The 10-8 Standard:
In several states, 10-8 is the code that an officer is "in service" or starting their shift. In our eyes, this standard is the goal that every LEO should be able to hit on any given day, to be "10-8." If you can achieve this standard in class, you are well on your way to pistol craftsmanship, and ready/capable to protect yourself and others if necessary.
The Life Saver Drill (LSD Standard): This standard isn't for the novice shooter. This standard requires shooters to have a full grasp of speed, accuracy, and throttle control. Achieving this standard earns you the LSD coin, as well as the confirmation that you are an advanced level shooter who has the skills to not only win the fight, but to dominate it.
*Standard must be shot in an NSDS class, or in front of an NSDS instructor and can only be attempted twice in one day. Students must successfully pass the 10-8 standard to earn the chance at passing the LSD standard.

3 yards: 6 rounds A zone moving backwards (retreating Bill Drill) - 2.5 seconds
7 yards: 3 rounds A zone firing hand only - 3 seconds
10 yards: 5 rounds A zone - 3 seconds

Introducing the NSDS Rifle LSD standard. Compiling data for law enforcement engagements involving a rifle and combining that with essential skills commonly needed when running and manipulating a patrol-style carbine, we have put together a standard that we believe tests shooters on target acquisition, weapon familiarization/manipulation, and throttle control. Achieving this standard earns you the Rifle LSD Coin, as well as confirmation that you are prepared to dominate any fight you show up to with a rifle.

Life Saver Drill
25 yards: 1 round A zone - 2.5 seconds
Rifle starts in "Patrol Ready" condition (loaded mag inserted in rifle, chamber empty, bolt closed) on a barrel/table/bench. Shooter may not touch the gun until the timer beep sounds
15 yards: 5 rounds A zone - 2.5 seconds
Rifle may be shouldered but muzzle must be pointed down at 45 degrees
10 yards: 6 rounds A zone - 2.5 seconds
Shooter must face right or left until timer beep sounds. On timer beep, shooter must turn 90 degrees before engaging target. Rifle must start facing straight down to avoid flagging others on the line
7 yards: 3 rounds A zone, 2 rounds 3x5 head box - 2 seconds
Rifle may be shouldered but muzzle must be pointed down at 45 degrees
